Established in 1866 by W.C. Hunter, Hunter Bros as it was know, was Wagga
Wagga’s first gift house, stocking a wide range of items including
jewellery, silverware, stationery, tobacco, books, toys, crockery, sporting
equipment, perfumes and firearms.
Hunters supplied the original Wagga Wagga Gold Cup trophy for the annual Gold Cup meeting, which is now one of the major tourism drawcards for the city attracting thousands visitors each year.
A lot has changed in Wagga Wagga since the late 1800’s many businesses have come and gone; new buildings constructed, older ones demolished, the city itself has transformed from a small town, into the largest inland city in NSW. Even Hunters has upgraded their front shop façade over the years, though the quality of the products and services provided have lead the way in the community.
Yet through all the changes Hunters has remained a stalwart
of the community.
Sitting proudly ‘on the hill’ in Fitzmaurice Street, Hunters has provided the city of Wagga Wagga and its people with a reliable service, quality products from national and international brands, trustworthy operators and a raft of local knowledge for nearly 140 years.
The current owners, David Ballantyne, Scott Woodhouse and Ben Howard are dedicated to maintaining the principles that W.C. Hunter established nearly 140 years ago - Local people helping local people. Fitzmaurice Street and the surrounding streets have been listed as local heritage areas, meaning the legacy established back in 1866 will remain for generations to come.
Today, Hunters is Wagga Wagga’s leading stationer, providing outstanding professional customer service and leading brand products for our business and private clients. The newsagency division of the shop has the largest range of special interest magazines and newspapers in the city, and services many of the business houses with the latest local, national and international news.
